Fall Trout Stocking update- This week, DEP stocked the Shetucket River, Salmon River (including the TMA), Natchaug River, Scantic River, Hammonasset River (including the TMA), Mashapaug Lake, and the Chatfield Hollow, Mohegan Park Pond and Day Pond Trout Parks with a total of 6,000 brown trout (these fish are in the 11-14” range). The Valley Falls Park Pond Trout Park was stocked with 200 standard-size rainbow trout.

Rivers & streams – Conditions (moderate temperatures and flows) have been good for late summer/early fall trout fishing, with good reports from the West Branch Farmington, Farmington, Mill (Fairfield), Norwalk, Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers. Fishing should continue to improve as we move deeper into autumn. As water temperatures cool, anglers can expect aggressive pre-spawn trout taking streamers with heavy hits. Try white, yellow and brown colors. Nymphing also picks up in October, and patterns to try include Midge Pupa/Larva, Brassie, Zebra Midge, Micro Mayfly, Serendipity & Copper John. Several days of rain are in the forecast, so anglers venturing out this weekend are reminded that flows in smaller tributaries typically rise quickest, but also drop back to fishable levels quickest. Anglers are also reminded that Real time stream flow data from 51 USGS gauging stations can be found at the following USGS web page: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ct/nwis/current/?type=flow

FARMINGTON RIVER – West Branch flows are currently clear and low, but will increase following completion of DEP’s annual electrofishing survey on Thursday. At that time flows at Riverton are expected to increase to 300-400 cfs. As several days of rain are expected, flows, especially below the confluence with the Still River could increase significantly this weekend. Patterns/hatches include Tricos (Trycorythodes stygiatus, #22-28, 7:00am-10:00am, Riverton Area), Isonychia bicolor (major hatch, #10-14, fast water, afternoon/evening), Blue Wing Olives (Drunella & Baetis sps., #22-28, mid-late afternoon), Cahills/Summer (Stenonema ithaca (#18-22), Sulfurs duns (Heptagenia sps., #16-20, below the dam due to low temperatures, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day; green #22-26, evening; summer pupa #18-20 morning), Midges (#22-32, morning), Black Ants (#16-18, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid) and Stone Hopper (#10-12, mid day).

Housatonic River – Conditions have been very good for early fall trout fishing, with dropping temperatures (currently in the upper 50’s°F, mornings) and clear, moderate and quite fishable flows, currently at 450 cfs in Falls Village and 690 cfs in Gaylordsville. With a significant rain event possible, flows may increase to more difficult-to-fish levels this weekend. For updated flow information, anglers can call FirstLight Power toll-free at 1-888-417-4837. Insect hatches/patterns include Blue Wing Olive (#18-26, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Leadwing Coachman (#10-12 evening), Cahills/Summer (#12-14), and Black caddis (#16, early morning & evening). Golden stonefly nymphs hatch at first light and adults egg-lay after dark, trout will ignore everything else when they are on the water. Try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#14-18, mid day in fast water), Sulfurs (#16-18), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day), Stone Hopper (#8-10, mid day) and Flying Ants (#16-18, mid day, when windy/humid). Try nymphing the pockets, deeper riffles and pool heads.

Since July, the lake has been drawn down over 5 feet to facilitate planned work includes construction of a new concrete spillway, inlets and earth embankment, and the low water levels have made boat launching and retrieval difficult and at times, hazardous. These stockings were intended to enhance the population of large trout on the river, which recent DEP sampling found to be at low levels, possibly due to last year’s extreme conditions. Additionally, the Kent Falls Trout Park and the East Aspetuck River were stocked with a total of 1,000 rainbow trout.

There are plenty of BUNKER (Atlantic menhaden) in most of the tidal rivers, harbors and coves along the coast making an easy feast for BLUEFISH and STRIPED BASS so don’t over look the inshore areas. Shore-based anglers should take advantage during the fall when fishing is at its best. Some of the coastal state parks offer great shore fishing access. Anglers are still finding good river smallie action on the Housatonic River (try warm, sunny afternoons) and DEP’s sampling earlier this week found plenty of smallmouth waiting for anglers.

This extended season facilitates multiple stockings of a number of popular areas (especially the Trout Parks), and the earlier start takes advantage of good late summer and early fall weather. This week, to start the season, DEP stocked the Black Rock, Wharton Brook, and Wolfe Park (Great Hollow Pond) Trout Parks, the lower Farmington River Trout Management Area (TMA) and the Mill River in Hamden (including the TMA). A total of 3,300 brown trout were released this week, and these fish were in the 11-13 inch range.

Reports from both the West Branch Farmington and Housatonic Rivers have been very good. During the late summer, trout anglers should definitely keep terrestrial fly patterns in mind.

Farmington River – Conditions are good, fishing has been a bit challenging but good, and there are still plenty of the 2,400 trout stocked into the West Branch last week awaiting anglers. West Branch water temperatures are in the mid 60’s °F. West Branch flows currently are clear and fishable, about 330 cfs at Riverton plus an additional 60 cfs from the Still River. With heavy rains from the remnants of Hanna a possibility, anglers are reminded that flows may increase during this weekend. DEP currently is planning to conduct its annual electrofishing survey of the river from September 9th through 11th. With a possibility of heavy rain in the forecast for Saturday (Tropical Storm Hanna remnants), flows may however increase significantly this weekend, anglers should call FirstLight Power at 1-888-417-4837 for updated flow information. Insect hatches/patterns include flying ants (#18-22, mid-day, when windy/humid and after rains, September is peak month), Fall Sulfurs (#16-18), White Wulff (#10-14), Blue Wing Olive (#22-26, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Leadwing Coachman (#10-12 evening, September is peek month), Cahill (#12-14, evening), and Black caddis (#16-18, early morning & evening).
STRIPED BASS fishing remains good at the usual spots: between Watch Hill and Fishers Island, Napatree Point to Sandy Point (Stonington), Ram Island Reef (Fishers Island Sound), the Race, Sluiceway, Plum Gut, Bartlett Reef, Black Point, outer humps off Hatchett Reef, lower Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, the reefs off Branford, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, the reefs off Norwalk, the Cows off Stamford, and Greenwich Harbor.

BLUEFISH fishing is good to excellent throughout LIS. Many of the harbors and tidal rivers are loaded with PEANUT and ADULT BUNKER (Atlantic menhaden) so that means bluefish and stripers aren’t too far away. Bluefish can be found basically anywhere in LIS during this time of year. Popular chopper spots include the Race, Thames River, Pigeon Rip, Plum Gut, lower Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, the reefs off Branford, New Haven Harbor (Sandy Point), Charles Island area to Milford Point, Buoys 18 and 20 off Stratford/Bridgeport, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground area, around the Norwalk Islands, and Cable and Anchor Reef.

Shad spots include the Mystic River, Niantic River and the Connecticut River.

SCUP (porgy) fishing remains good to excellent on the local rocky reefs and the time to go is now!

Also this is the time of year when some our southern visitors arrive in LIS such as a cobia was caught by an angler fishing off East Haven!

Special Note: Just a reminder, the summer flounder (fluke) and tautog (blackfish) recreational fishing seasons are currently closed.

The heavy rains late last week slowed the trout fishing for the early part of the week but conditions improved as the flows moderated. However another threat of thunderstorms for Thursday into Friday may impact the fishing for this weekend. As the major hatches begin to wind down, anglers are advised to include terrestrial fly patterns. Good reports last week from the Upper Farmington River, Housatonic River, Natchaug River and the Mill River TMA.

Farmington River – The river at Tariffville is currently 66° running at 2400cfs with a slight stain. East Branch flows have been reduced from 350cfs to 150cfs while the West Branch remains at 116cfs. Trico Duns/Spinners (Trycorythodes stygiatus, #22-28) should be available early-mid morning as a result iof these reduced flows. Ephemerella needhami (#22-26, early morning), Leadwing Coachman (Isonychia bicolor, #12-14, fast water, afternoon/evening), Blue Wing Olives (Drunella sps. & Baetis sps.; #22-26, mid-late afternoon), Sulphurs duns (#18, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Caddis (tan #16-18, all day; green #22-26, evening; summer pupa #18-20 morning), Cahills/Summer (Stenonema ithaca, #12-18, early morning), Midges (#22-32, morning), Black Ants (#14-20, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid), Stone Hopper (#8-12, mid day) and Golden Drake (Anthopotamus distinctus, #10-14, late evening) are successful patterns. With the impending rains for Thursday into Friday, flows may be variable this weekend, call NGS at 1-888-417-4837 for updated flow information. The White Fly (Ephoron leukon) hatch is on. Use a White Wulff, #10-12. Other insect activity includes: Blue Wing Olive larvae (#10-16, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Light Cahill (#12-14, evening), and Black caddis (#14-20, early morning & evening). Midges (#20-26) and stoneflies are located at the mouths of streams. Golden stonefly nymphs hatch at first light and adults egg-lay after dark. Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening). Bigger fish should start hitting again as the river cools down. LARGEMOUTH BASS are being taken in the coves around Hartford-Middletown and in the lower river. SMALLMOUTH BASS are being caught in the north of the river (Enfield area & near the mouth of the Farmington River). CATFISH angling is rated as very good and they are available to anglers on cut bait near brush piles & in the deeper holes of the river. This is also a good time for terrestrial fly patterns. Good reports last week from the West Branch Farmington River, Farmington River, Housatonic River, Naugatuck River, Eightmile River (East Haddam/Lyme), Mill River and the Wild Trout Management Areas (WTMA) on Beaver Brook and the Tankerhoosen River. During summer due to their environmental characteristics, many of the WMTA’s can provide good trout fishing for the more spectacularly colored “wild” brookies and brown trout. Use stealth & a 4 weight fly rod for this elusive quarry.

Anglers are reminded that the thermal refuge areas on the Housatonic, Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers are currently closed to fishing and will reopen on September 1. There is no fishing within 100 feet of the mouths of posted tributaries to these rivers.

Note that with possible thunderstorm activity in the forecast for the next week, flows (especially below Riverton) may be variable. Water temperatures are in the mid 60’s°F. You should be on 8-9 x tippet at this time of the summer. Ephemerella needhami (#22-28, mid morning), Leadwing Coachman (Isonychia bicolor, #10-12, fast water, evening), Blue Wing Olives (Drunella sps. & Baetis sps.; #22-28, mid-late afternoon), Sulphurs duns (Epeorus vitreus, #16-20, mostly upriver, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Cahill (Stenonema ithaca, #12-18), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day; green #22-26, evening; summer pupa #18-20 morning), Midges (#22-28, morning), Black Ants (#14-20, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid), Stone Hopper (#8-12, mid day) and Golden Drake (Anthopotamus distinctus, #10-14, late evening) are successful patterns. Depending on precipitation patterns, flows may be variable this weekend, call NGS at 1-888-417-4837 for updated flow information. Morning water temperatures are good for summer trout fishing, having cooled to the mid to upper 60’s °F. We are into the White Fly (Ephoron leukon) hatch, use a White Wolf (#10-12). Other insect hatches include Sulphurs (#14-16, evening), Blue Wing Olive (#18-24, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Leadwing Coachman, (#12-14 evening), Light Cahill (#12-16, evening) and Black caddis (#16-18, early morning & evening). Try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#18-22, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day), Stone Hopper (#8-10, mid day) and Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid). Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening). Patterns to try include White Zonkers, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn and Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10).

Drifting live bunker (Atlantic menhaden) live eels, or scup on three way rigs or trolling the tube and worm is the main stay for catching that trophy fish. Striper locations include the rocky reefs between Watch Hill and eastern Fishers Island (Catumb Rocks, Sugar Reef, and Lords Passage)), the Race, Sluiceway, Plum Gut, Bartlett Reef, Black Point, Hatchett Reef, Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, the reefs off Norwalk and the Cows off Stamford.

Other spots include Pigeon Rip, Plum Gut, Long Sand Shoal, Sixmile Reef, New Haven Harbor, Buoys 18 and 20 off Stratford/Bridgeport, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground area, around the Norwalk Islands, and Cable Anchor Reef. Along the shoreline snapper fishing is good and improving as the season progresses.

Fair fishing is reported at Mansfield Hollow Reservoir, Pachaug Pond, Bantam Lake, Lake Zoar, Candlewood Lake, Highland Lake, Scoville Reservoir and Morey Pond, and slow fishing at Powers Lake. Mixed reports for Long Pond, Mono Pond and Moodus Reservoir.

Fishing for smallmouth is fair at Lake McDonough, Lake Lillinonah, West Hill Pond, Lake Housatonic and Coventry Lake, and anglers had to work hard for their catches at Gardner Lake, Crystal Lake, Bantam Lake and Highland Lake. Mixed reports for Lake Zoar. Before the rains, river smallmouth action had been excellent on the Housatonic River, and smallies were also providing some action in the Quinnebaug, Farmington and Shetucket Rivers.

With flows moderating and pleasant temperatures forecast, conditions should be good for summer trout angling this weekend (in some areas, fishing small tributary streams may be the best option). And, as typical in the summer, early and late in the day are the best times.

Anglers are reminded that the thermal refuge areas on the Housatonic, Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers are currently closed to fishing and will reopen on September 1. There is no fishing within 100 feet of the mouths of posted tributaries to these rivers.

Current hatches include/patterns include Light Cahill (Stenonema sps., #14-16), Cream Cahill (two tailed, #16), Ephemerella needhami (#22-26, not all at once in the traditional early morning, 3-4 times per day), Leadwing Coachman (Isonychia bicolor, #12-14, fast water, evening), Blue Wing Olives (Drunella sps., #22-26, mid-late afternoon), Sulphurs duns (Epeorus vitreus, #16-20, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Rusty Spinner (#20-28), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day; green #18/22, evening), Midges (#22-32, morning), Black Ants (#14-18, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#8-10, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid) and Golden Drake (Anthopotamus distinctus, #10-14, late evening). At this time of year you should be on 8 or 9 x for the tippet size.

Housatonic River - Flows are clearing and still high, but continue to drop (currently 1,340 cfs at Falls Village and 2,040 cfs at Gaylordsville) to more fishable levels. Flows may be below 1,000 cfs (Falls Village) during the weekend (depending on precipitation, call NGS at 1-888-417-4837 for updated flow information). Morning water temperatures continue to be in the low to mid 70’s °F. Insect hatches/patterns include some Alder/Zebra Caddis (Macrostemum zebratum are around in small numbers, #10-12, afternoon-evening near overhangs), Sulphurs (#14-16, evening), Blue Wing Olive (#18-24, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Leadwing Coachman (#10-12 evening), Light Cahill (#14-20, evening) and assorted caddis (#16-18, early morning & evening). Terrestrial season is here. Try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#18-22, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day) and Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid). Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening). Patterns to try include White Zonkers, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10). The Dobson Fly is active and anglers are using a black woolly bugger to mimic it.

Candlewood Lake has been fishing slow for trout.

CONNECTICUT RIVER – High flows put a damper on most angler activity last weekend. LARGEMOUTH BASS fishing in the coves downstream from Middletown was reported as fair this past weekend. Prior to the rains, SMALLMOUTH BASS fishing was fair (at best) north of Hartford and CATFISH angling had been good, with plenty of fish being taken on fresh/frozen cut bait. Flows are still high and murky, but should continue to drop through the weekend to more comfortable levels. With the river carrying excess floating debris, anglers should also continue to exercise additional caution on the water.

The usual striper haunts include the rocky reefs between Watch Hill and eastern Fishers Island, the Race, Sluiceway, Plum Gut, Bartlett Reef, Black Point, Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, the reefs off Norwalk and the Cows off Stamford.

INLAND REPORT

LARGEMOUTH BASS fishing continues to be generally good to very good, with reports from Bashan Lake, Lake McDonough, East Twin Lake (recent catches include several 5 plus lb bass), Lake Waramaug, Highland Lake, Aspinook Pond, Gardner Lake, Rogers Lake, Wononscopomuc Lake, Silver Lake (Berlin/Meriden), Wyassup Lake, Mashapaug Lake, Lake Quonnipaug, Park Pond and Amos Lake. Bass fishing is reported to be fair at Powers Lake, Beach Pond, Mansfield Hollow Reservoir, Crystal Lake, Moodus Reservoir, Black Pond (Woodstock) and Mamanasco Lake, and slow at Ball Pond, Winchester Lake and Pachaug Pond. Mixed reports for Coventry Lake and Mudge Pond. SMALLMOUTH BASS– Action for smallies continues to be variable, with good reports from Candlewood Lake, Lake McDonough and Bashan Lake, fair reports from Highland Lake, Gardner Lake and Colebrook Reservoir, and slow at Coventry Lake and Beach Pond. River smallmouth action has been excellent on the Housatonic River, also some action reported from the Willimantic River and the Farmington River (Tariffville area). NORTHERN PIKE fishing is reported as fair to good, with reports from Mansfield Hollow Reservoir, Lake Lillinonah, Winchester Lake, Bantam Lake and Pachaug Pond.

West Hill Pond anglers are catching KOKANEE by trolling at 4-5 colors of lead line using a flasher with beads and corn, or still fishing at night with a lantern and a corn/meal worm combination in 30’ of water.

Some WALLEYE catches are being reported from Lake Saltonstall, Saugatuck Reservoir, Mashapaug Lake and Squantz Pond. TROUT

Rivers & streams

- The rains this week have increased flows (much needed in portions of eastern CT) in many rivers and streams throughout the state. In some areas, fishing small tributary streams may be the best option. And, as typical in the summer, early and late in the day are the best times. Good reports from the West Branch Farmington River last week, and also several nice catches reported from the Housatonic River. Anglers are reminded that the thermal refuge areas on the Housatonic, Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers are currently closed to fishing and will reopen on September 1. There is no fishing within 100 feet of the mouths of posted tributaries to these rivers. Farmington River – West Branch flows from Hogback dam to Riverton are currently clear and low, about 165 cfs. Due to the midweek rainstorms, flows below Riverton are currently murky and high (but still fishable) with Still river inputs currently at about 460 cfs. Depending on the amount of additional precipitation the area recieves, flows may begin to clear and drop during the weekend. Morning water temperatures remain in the mid 60’s °F. Current hatches/patterns include Ephemerella needhami (#22-28, early morning), Cahills (Stenonema Ithaca, #12-14), Leadwing Coachman (Isonychia bicolor, #10-12, evening), Blue Wing Olives (Drunella sps., #22-28, mid-late afternoon), Sulphurs (Epeorus vitreus, #16-20) duns (#14-20, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Caddis (Brachycentrus sps., tan #14-18, all day; green #22-26, evening), Midges (#22-32, morning), Black Ants (#8-10, hot mornings in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18), Flying Ants/Termites (#14-18, when hot & humid after a rain) and Golden Drake (Anthopotamus distinctus, #10-14, late evening). Housatonic River - Flows are colored, high and rising, currently 1,900 cfs at Falls Village. Anglers are advised to call First Light Power’s toll free number (1-888-417-4837) for up-to-date flow information this weekend. Morning water temperatures have been in the low to mid 70’s °F. Insect hatches/patterns include Alder/Zebra Caddis (Macrostemum zebratum, are around in small numbers, #10-12, afternoon-evening near overhangs), Isonychia bicolor (#12-14, evening), Light Cahill (Stenacron sps. #12-14, evening), and Tan & green caddis (#14-20, early morning & evening). Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening), patterns to try include White Zonkers, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10, with a red throat).

Lakes & Ponds

– Trout fishing is variable, with good reports from Crystal Lake and East Twin Lake, fair reports from Highland Lake and Long Pond, and mixed reports for Wononscopomuc Lake, Beach Pond, Squantz Pond and West Hill Pond.

CONNECTICUT RIVER

– Due to the recent rains, flows are high and murky, anglers should exercise additional caution on the river. CATFISH (some over 10 lbs) are being taken on frozen cut bait, best action at night. Schoolie STRIPED BASS action is fairly good in the lower river, some large stripers are also being caught on live eels and hickory shad). Few reports received for NORTHERN PIKE, but the coves and Haddam Meadows remain the areas to try. SMALLMOUTH BASS fishing north of Hartford was fair.

FISHING ACCESS & BOAT LAUNCH INFORMATION

The state boat launch on the THAMES RIVER in New London will be closed from July 14

th to August 28th

for renovations. Due to inappropriate off-site parking by some users of the state boat launch at COVENTRY LAKE, once capacity is reached at this launch, further use of the launch will not be allowed until a parking space or spaces become available.

Anglers are reminded that the entire “seawall” area extending from the handicap-accessable fishing pier to the permitted swim area at SQUANTZ POND is now closed to all public access.

MARINE FISHING REPORT

Water temperatures in Long Island Sound (LIS) are in the low to mid 70’s °F. Check out the following web sites for more detailed water temperatures and marine boating conditions:

Remember, to check the 2008 Connecticut Angler’s Guide for tidal information (page 52) and pages 49-51 for saltwater trophy fish award information.

STRIPED BASS fishing is excellent for cow bass with fish reported from 40 to in excess of 60 lbs! Drifting live bunker (Atlantic menhaden) eels, or scup along with trolling the tube and worm combination early in the morning (right before dawn) and at night are producing great catches. Striped bass spots include the reefs off Watch Hill, the Race, Sluiceway, Plum Gut, Bartlett Reef, Black Point, Long Sand Shoal, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, and the reefs off Norwalk and Stamford. Schoolie striper fishing remains good in the tidal rivers. BLUEFISH fishing has improved with slammers being reported in the Race, Pigeon Rip, Plum Gut and Sixmile Reef. The Race has been red hot early in the morning during the ebb tide this week. SNAPPER fishing is good depending on the tide. Flood tide has been the best time.

Niantic River is the best spot for HICKORY SHAD. SUMMER FLOUNDER (fluke) fishing remains slow in LIS. Eastern LIS including Fishers Island Sound and off the south side of Fishers Island in deep water (60+) is better for keeper fluke. SCUP (porgies) fishing has really improved on the local rocky reefs and wrecks with BLACK SEA BASS and TAUTOG (blackfish) mixed in.
