My name is Erick Sirignano and I’m an Optometrist and avid fisherman. I enjoy fishing so much that I actually bought a house on Cedar Lake in Wolcott, CT in June 2007. Our house was originally a small outdated nightmare of a property comprised of a small lot and a dishevelled old cottage. My girlfriend Kate and I spent most of the last 6 months of 2007 and first 3 months of 2008 gutting and rebuilding the house giving it a new and modern feeling. Now that the majority of the house is done, it’s time to enjoy the lake and do some fishing.
For those who don’t live in Wolcott, here is a little info about Cedar Lake A.K.A. Cedar Swamp Pond. The lake is private and accessible only to members of the Cedar Lake Owners Association. Membership in the association requires that you own waterfront property and pay your membership charges and annual association dues. The lake is manmade, approximately 146 acres, and is 12 feet deep at it’s deepest point. The shoreline is rocky and the 126 residences (and their docks) on the lake provide ample cover for the lake’s numerous species of fish.
Swimming our waters are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, red eyed rock bass, pickerel, sunfish, perch, and catfish. The fishing pressure is low and your odds of catching a trophy fish are great. 7-8lb’ers are caught every year, and it is not uncommon to catch 100 bass in a day.
If you get a chance to visit friends living on the lake or even better have a chance to purchase a property on this lake, I would say run don’t walk, because Cedar Lake provides some of the best fishing in the state!
Here is a question that I received from a prospective buyer on Cedar Lake, and my answer to them…
Question:
I am considering purchasing a property on Cedar Lake and wanted to gather some information from people who live on the lake. I can see from your website that the fishing is superb, which is good as I do enjoy fishing. I wanted to ask you about the water quality, can you always swim in the lake? Is there surface plant vegetation? What can you tell me about the town and the lake association? Are there boat restrictions?
Answer:
A good place to find an answer to some of the association questions you have, www.cloa.org is the association web page. It is pretty outdated but has some info on it. As far as the lake itself, the water is great, it is swimmable all year, it is 12 feet deep at its deepest point and warms up quick in the summer (this year the temp got to 79 degrees).
Only the houses with lake frontage have rights to use the lake, and the property must belong to the association if you want to have a boat. If you buy a house that currently is not a member in the association, it will cost about $9,000 to join, the annual dues are about $300.
Boat restrictions are found here http://cloa.org/boating_rules_and_regs.html and no jetskis are allowed.
Vegetation is not surface, it is mostly grass and weeds, no pads, and it is treated annually by the association with dues. Also the dam is maintained with association dues.
The town of Wolcott is a great place to live, it is close to Bristol and Waterbury (for shopping and entertainment), but still has a rural relaxing feeling.
