Although cabelas has graced our small state with its presence by opening an East Hartford location, there is no store like a bass pro shops to cater to the needs of New England’s anglers. They tend to focus more on hunting and I have found that I can’t find everything I need there.

The new bass pro shops is said to be in the preliminary stages of development near costco, kohls, and coco key water resort. Although it is not certain whether this bps location will materialize, there is one thing that is certain… If this store does come I will need to come up with a higher fishing budget!

The owner “Nicky Papers” claims a couple found the body of this new montauk monster while taking a stroll one night. This couple just so happened to have his contact info and email him while on the beach after this discovery (yeah I know it sounds far fetched to me too). Nicky then replied to them, talked to them on the phone and then drove “an hour” to see this new montauk monster, all without anyone other than the couple and Nicky seeing it.

Nicky claims the corpse of this new montauk monster smelled like a mix of low-tide and rotten garbage. In my opinion this is a pig or boar, it was planted by Nicky, and he is looking to cash in on this scam. The only thing that stinks like rotten garbage is this story!

Another "new" montauk monster found

On board the boat were 3 NFL players, Nick Schuyler, 24, of Tampa, Florida. Corey Smith, a defensive end who played last season with the Detroit Lions, linebacker Marquis Cooper, who was with the Oakland Raiders, and William Bleakley, a former Florida college football player.

Nick Schuyler is so far the only man that has been found. He was conscious when Coast Guard found him, and he was able to report that all men aboard had life vests on when the boat tipped. He claimed that high seas and 45 mile an hour winds have been identified as the cause of this 21 ft fishing boat’s capsize.

The search continues for the remaining men. Hopefully they will be found shortly and in good health.

Like the montauk monster, I have a feeling that this is just another viral marketing campaign, even though the montauk monster was never officially determined to be a fake. I guess only time will tell, who knows, maybe we will see a movie with the title, “Borneo Monster”, or “Montauk Monster”, or even a show down between the two Monsters called “Montauk Monster v. Borneo Monster”.  Hopefully it will be better than Alien v. Predator!

A recession doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love! Tight lines everybody…

Today we were driving from Foxwoods to Mystic for lunch and I decided to stop in and see if they had any deals. The place was pretty empty inside despite a new management team coming in, but they said they were remodeling and bringing more stock in soon. Even though it was pretty slim pickins I found 2 penn 8’6″ surf combos on sale for 30% off and picked them up. 2 penn surf combos for $110 out the door really wasn’t that bad. Other than that I didn’t see any real good deals, but like I said the store was pretty bare from the liquidations and the remodel. Hopefully the new owners can come in and make this place something special since it has the potential.

So you have been trying to insulate your house against the onslaught of cold weather this season? You went to Home Depot and you bought a can of “Great Stuff” insulating foam sealant to fill those little cracks around the house. It works great at insulating, but it’s not very people friendly as you likely found out if you are reading this!

I needed to fill some cracks in my foundation and since it is too cold to fish, but not cold enough to ice fish yet, I figured I should get some work done around the house.  I started filling in the cracks in my crawlspace (which is dark), and was wiping the excess off the tip with my bare finger expecting to take it off with some solvent later… BIG MISTAKE! This is the most stubborn chemical I have ever encountered.

Once I got into the light I saw that they had written in large letters “Always wear gloves and eye protection”… OOPS. Since the damage was done I consulted the can for removal instructions. Apparently acetone will remove non-cured sealant, but only mechanical removal of cured urethane will work.  Well I don’t have 5 days to kill with nasty hands, so here is what has and has not worked for me.

Acetone – worked so so on the portions that were not fully cured, but still required some hard scrubbing.

Mineral Spirits – do not try this, it just makes the spray on insulation turn black on your hands.

WD40 - AGAIN like mineral spirits do not try this, it will only turn the urethane black.

Gasoline – worked a little with some scrubbing, but left my hands smelling terrible, and also dried them out.

Soap and hot water - does nothing.

100 grit sandpaper – finally something that works! Strong enough to remove the insulation, fine enough to keep your skin!

Here are some other solutions that I have seen on the internet in my research which I didn’t try, but figured it might be nice to have everything in one place.

Wear latex gloves until your hands get really sweaty and then wash with hot water and an abrasive soap.

Carburetor fluid

GooGone – Most people say it doesn’t work on this.

Low pressure sand blaster – who has a sand blaster?

Gojo Pumice orange hand cleaner- some say it works a little.

Paint thinner – most say it doesn’t work.

Razor blade – not suggested!

Motsenbockers Foam Sealant Remover – Only read a little about this but someone said it can be found at home depot, if you try this leave me a comment and let me know how it works. Here is a link for the stuff too – http://liftoffinc.com/product-sealant-remover.php.

My first suggestion wear gloves BEFORE using this stuff, but if you do get spray insulation on your hands, I hope something above works!

Now I just can’t wait for this cold to break so I can start posting some fishing reports in real time…
