The Classified ad should read - “Vintage lighthouse in good working order, great location, and scenic views of Long Island Sound. Blowout pricing for right buyer.”
Officially known as the Saybrook Breakwater Light, the Saybrook lighthouse has been put up for sale. The historic navigational station was built in 1886 out of cast iron and brick. 49 feet tall the beacon stands on a one half-mile long jetty at the entrance to Old Saybrook Harbor, where the Connecticut River empties into Long Island Sound.
According to news reports in the Hartford Courant and other sources, the CT General Services Administration has decided to put this boating icon on the list of available excess federal government property. This means that the administration no longer wants to be responsible for it’s upkeep or expenses. The current asking price is a whopping $1…
Now before you go reaching for your wallet to break out a crisp new “Washington”, there are some stipulations to this “historic” deal. Since the station is still a functioning navigation tool, the new owners must be a government agency or a nonprofit organization that is prepared and equipped to maintain the lighthouse in proper working condition, as well as keep it available for public education and recreation.
If you own a nonprofit organization and are looking to throw your hat into the ring as a bidder, the application deadline has been set for the end of September. It is not often you get the opportunity to buy lighthouses, so if you are interested get your application in early, and let’s keep this guidling light in good working order!
